NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Junior Joe Taylor gave UNC its highest finish during individual competition Saturday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Fencing Championships, tying for fifth in men's epee. After winning bronze last year, Taylor just missed repeating, falling 5-4 in his final two bouts to finish out of the semifinals.
Sunday is the team competition, with the men starting at 7 a.m. and the women beginning around noon. Action is taking place at the Castellan Family Fencing Center on Notre Dame's campus.
"This is the first time we've seen these teams all season, so getting a feel for the field was a big part of today," UNC coach Matt Jednak said. "Yes, we wanted better results, but at least we now have some context going into tomorrow. It was a tough day and it's a quick turnaround to tomorrow, but that's why we train hard all season, so that we're ready for this."
Two other Tar Heels earned top-eight finishes: sophomore Beni Rabinowitz placed seventh in men's sabre and freshman Sophia Mandour was seventh in women's foil.
The host Fighting Irish won gold in all three weapons for both men and women.
"I still think we're in really good shape for day two here and I expect us to compete at a high level tomorrow," Jednak said. "The big thing now is getting rested."
