Tar Heels Fall 83-65 at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In its final road game of the regular season, the North Carolina women's basketball team fell 83-65 to host Notre Dame Thursday evening at Purcell Pavilion. With their sixth loss in a row, the Tar Heels are now 16-12 overall, 7-10 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
"It was a tough night for our group, and we'll have to regroup quickly – it's a quick turnaround in this league, with Duke coming to Carmichael on Sunday," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "We'll look forward to playing in front of our home fans."
UNC closes out the regular season with Sunday's home game against Duke. Tipoff at Carmichael Arena is 2 p.m. and the Tar Heels will celebrate Senior Day, with ceremonies following the game.
A trio of seniors scored in double figures – Taylor Koenen led the way with 19 points, Shayla Bennett scored 17 and Madinah Muhammad, playing 100 miles from her hometown of Chicago, had 10. Bennett was the team's top rebounder with eight boards, and junior Leah Church equaled her career high with seven. Freshman Malu Tshitenge also had seven rebounds.
Temperatures were below freezing outside, with snow falling intermittently throughout the day, but the Fighting Irish (12-17, 7-10 ACC) were on fire from the start of their Senior Night game. While UNC missed six of its first seven shots, Notre Dame hit five of its first six to jump out to an early lead. After opening with a 7-0 run, the Fighting Irish led throughout the first half and were up 43-32 at halftime after shooting 53.1 percent from the field, 77.8 percent (7-9) from three-point range.
The Irish used a 12-0 run early in the third quarter to push their lead to 22, and in the fourth quarter led by as many as 24.
