Gray, Johnson Sweep ACC Weekly Honors
February 4, 2020 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina's Chris Gray and Caton Johnson have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, as announced by the league Tuesday.
Gray, a junior attackman from Wading River, N.Y., scored a conference-leading six points (4g, 2a) in his Carolina debut against Colgate. The transfer from Boston University wasted no time putting points on the board, scoring four goals in the first quarter. He is currently tied for sixth in the NCAA in points and goals per game and leads the ACC in goals per game.
The last Tar Heel to score four goals in a quarter was Luke Goldstock, whose four fourth-quarter goals helped propel the Tar Heels to a 14-10 win over Notre Dame in the 2017 ACC Championship title game on April 30, 2017. Gray is also the first UNC player to have six points in a single game since Chris Cloutier scored six goals against Mercer on February 28, 2018. Gray's four goals are the most in a game by a Tar Heel since Timmy Kelly scored four at Maryland on March 23, 2019.
Johnson, a sophomore goalkeeper from Lancaster, Pa., made a conference-best nine saves with just two goals allowed on 20 shots faced in Carolina's season opener versus Colgate. Johnson currently leads the NCAA in save percentage (0.818) and his performance helped the Tar Heels have the second-best scoring defense in the NCAA through opening weekend.
