Deja Kelly's list of honors just keeps getting longer. In the past week alone, she's led her team to a state championship and picked up two All-America recognitions and a prestigious state award.
On Friday, she was named the 2019-20 Gatorade Texas Girls Basketball Player of the Year, which recognizes not only athletic performance but academic achievement and outstanding character.
On Saturday, Kelly scored a game-high 23 points as her Duncanville High School team topped previously-unbeaten Cypress Creek 63-47 to win the Texas 6A State Championship. Playing in San Antonio, where Kelly grew up, she earned MVP honors in leading her school to its 11th state title.
Monday she was named a 2020 WBCA High School Coaches' All-America honorable mention.
Tuesday she was named a 2020 Jersey Mike's Naismith National High School All-America honorable mention.
All of those honors go on a list that already includes highlights like selections to the McDonald's All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic Game. During her high school career she scored more than 3,000 points.
Kelly is one of five outstanding high school players who signed with UNC in November. Joining her in head coach Courtney Banghart's first signing class are Anya Poole, Kennedy Todd-Williams, Alyssa Ustby and Ali Zelaya. Together they were ranked as the No. 11 class in the nation by ESPNW.
