March 20, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – As ACC play was starting to heat up for the Carolina Baseball team, Aaron Sabato was catching fire at the plate for the Diamond Heels.
After a sluggish start, Sabato smashed a double against Minnesota on Feb. 28 that sparked an unbelievable tear, one that would last the rest of the season. He would finish the 10-game set batting .394 and slugging 1.030. He proved to be patient at the plate as well, as he drew 16 walks, more than double of anyone else on the Carolina baseball roster.
The final six games of the season for Sabato rivaled any six-game stretch across the country by any player. The Rye Brook, N.Y., native belted six home runs, plated 10 RBI, hit .450 and slugged 1.400. His .656 on-base percentage led the squad, as well as his 41 putouts in the field. He struck out just three times in his final 20 at-bats and drew 12 walks.
The astounding week ended with an ACC Player of the Week award, as well as being named as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.
He finished the 2020 season tied for first in the ACC in home runs with seven, which ranked eighth in the country. Sabato also drew 22 walks, which paced the conference and checked in at third among players across the country.
No stranger to success, Sabato raked in postseason accolades in 2019, which including being named a Freshman All-America and Third-Team All-America by Baseball America and D1 Baseball.
