March 31, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's tennis program has added Sara McClure to its previously announced 2020 recruiting class, announced Tuesday by head coach Brian Kalbas.Â
Â
"We welcome Sara and her family with open arms into our program," said Kalbas. "She comes from a Tar Heel family with her dad having played football here in Chapel Hill. Sara is an outstanding player that brings tremendous talent and a strong work ethic that will benefit us over the coming years."
Â
McClure, who hails from Ridgeland, South Carolina, and trains at the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy, is regarded as a five-star prospect and ranked No. 46 in the 2020 class by tennisrecruiting.net. She is the third ranked player in the state of South Carolina and No. 13 in the talent-rich Southeast region.Â
Â
She placed top six in three G18 singles events since May 2019, the USTA National Level 2: Columbus Day Open, the USTA National Level 3: Stan Smith Junior Championship and the National Level 2 Tournament in Rome, Georgia.
Â
McClure attended The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., as a freshman and sophomore. She led Hotchkiss to the New England Championship team title in 2018. McClure enjoyed an undefeated 2018 spring season by not surrendering a single set.
Â
Twice the recipient of the Hartcorn Award, given annually to the winner of the Hotchkiss Girls Tennis Tournament, McClure was a Founders All-League award winner both seasons. Â
Â
She has attended South Carolina Connections Academy the last two years as a junior and senior.Â
Â
McClure joins a star-studded Tar Heel class that includes Fiona Crawley and Reilly Tran, who are currently ranked No. 2 and No. 7, respectively, in the class of 2020.Â
Â
Sara has three sisters and is the daughter of Bryan and Anne McClure. Bryan played football for Mack Brown in 1992.
