March 5, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - Another weekend brings another strong test for the No. 1 ranked North Carolina women's tennis program. The Tar Heels host No. 8 Georgia Tech on Friday in a match that is scheduled to be played outside at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at 3 p.m. UNC will then visit No. 14 Wake Forest on Sunday at noon.
As part of the ongoing promotion for Friday matches, free pizza will be on-hand for all fans in attendance.Â
Carolina (16-0, 4-0 ACC) held steady at No. 1 in the national rankings for the fourth week in a row. The club extended its home winning streak to 32 matches with wins over No. 13 Virginia and No. 40 Virginia Tech.Â
The Tar Heels have six players ranked in singles this week: Alexa Graham (3), Sara Daavettila (5), Cameron Morra (6), Alle Sanford (51), Makenna Jones (52) and Elizabeth Scotty (89). In doubles, Daavettila/Graham (4), Jones/Morra (8) and Jones/Sanford (15) continue to find themselves among the best duos in the country.Â
Friday's match against the eighth ranked Yellow Jackets is already Carolina's sixth opponent this spring ranked in the top 10 nationally. Georgia Tech picked up a pair of ACC victories last week to climb two spots in the ITA poll that was released on Tuesday afternoon. The Jackets begin a five-match road trip in Chapel Hill.Â
In singles rankings, senior Kenya Jones moved up three spots in the polls to No. 20, while Victoria Flores moved 30 spots to No. 41. Gia Cohen sits at No. 123.
In doubles, Tech's top-seeded pair of Jones and Flores moved up 11 spots to enter the top 10, coming in at No. 6. The pair boasts a 19-2 record on the season.
The Tar Heels return to the courts with back-to-back home matches against Boston College and Syracuse on March 21 and 22 in Chapel Hill. Both matches are slated to begin at 11 a.m.
