Tar Heels Improve to Fifth at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Improving one spot, the North Carolina women's golf team had a solid second round and sits tied for fifth place with top-ranked Texas after Saturday's second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club. The Tar Heels shot 13-over-par 297 on Saturday and are at 593 after two rounds, 18 behind leading Wake Forest.

Senior Mariana Ocano recovered from a tough start to the front nine with nine consecutive pars followed by a birdie on 13. Ocano completed her second round three-over-par shooting 74, positioning herself in a tie for tenth going into Sunday.

Sophomore Jennifer Zhou finished the round tied for 15th. Zhou shot a four-over-par 75 on the day.

In the top-25 through two rounds, freshman Kayla Smith shot the best Tar Heel round of the day, a two-over-par 73. Smith picked up momentum with a birdie on the eighth hole, followed by all pars on the back nine.

With two birdies, senior Brynn Walker completed her round four-over-par 75. Her deuce on the 158-yard eighth hole allowed her to finished the front nine one-over-par.

Freshman Krista Junkkari fought through the round to finish with a ten-over-par 81 for the second round.Â

Individual, Nicole Lu, finished the day shooting a four-over-par 75, featuring two birdies on the front nine.

At the end of round two at Long Cove Course, Wake Forest leads the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a three-over-par score of 288 to give them a 575 score for the tournament.

The third round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate will continue at 8:50 a.m. at Long Cove on Sunday. Carolina is paired with Texas and Auburn on the first hole.
