Five Tar Heels Earn IL Media All-America Honors
April 1, 2020 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Five North Carolina men's lacrosse players have earned spots on the 2020 Inside Lacrosse Media All-America teams, the magazine announced on Wednesday.
Junior Chris Gray was named to the first team, while seniors Tanner Cook and Justin Anderson secured second- and third-team honors, respectively. Sophomore Connor Maher and redshirt freshman Will Bowen received honorable-mention recognition.
This marks the third time Gray has been selected to the IL Media All-America lists and his second time earning first-team honors. He previously earned honorable mention honors in 2017 and first-team All-America in 2018 at Boston University.
Gray, an attackman from Wading River, New York, played a major role in helping Carolina's offense lead the NCAA in points per game (30.14) and assists per game (12.29). By the end of his first season with the Tar Heels, Gray ranked second in the NCAA in points per game (6.86), tied for seventh in assists per game (3.00) and ranked eighth in goals per game (3.86).
Gray led the team in points (48), goals (27) and assists (21) and earned two spots in the Carolina record books. In Carolina's historic 17-10 win over Johns Hopkins, Gray scored a season-high nine points, with a career-high eight goals. Gray's nine points tied him for third in UNC history in single-game points, and his eight goals tied him for second all-time at Carolina in single-game goals.
A midfielder from Courtice, Ontario, Cook quickly became one of the nation's most notable playmakers in man-up opportunities. Cook's six goals on extra-man opportunities tied him for third in the NCAA and led the Tar Heels to the nation's best man-up offense with 17 goals on 22 attempts (.773). After just seven games, he had already broken his career records in single-season goals (20) and points (27). His 20 goals were the team's second most, while his 27 points ranked third on the team.
Anderson, a senior midfielder from Las Vegas, Nevada, earned his first All-America nod. Anderson helped Carolina secure four EMO goals in 2020, joining Cook as the top two category leaders in the Atlantic Coast Conference. With 15 goals on the season, he was also one of Carolina's most accurate shooters, taking 26 shots with 21 of them on goal (.808).
Maher, a preseason All-ACC selection in 2020, picked up 23 ground balls and caused three turnovers in his sophomore season. At Denver, the Timonium, Maryland, native had one caused turnover and a career-high six ground balls, the latter of which he would match two games later against Bryant. He scored the first goal of his career in Carolina's 18-11 win at Furman.
Bowen, a redshirt freshman from Cohasset, Massachusetts, made his Carolina debut after a preseason injury kept him off the field in 2019. Bowen led the team in caused turnovers with eight while also tallying 16 ground balls in his first competition season. In the program's 300th home victory, Bowen put up two assists for the first two points of his career.
The regular contributors to Inside Lacrosse and the Maverik Media Poll were tasked with picking four teams worth of players, with selections at attack, midfield, face-off, SSDM, LSM, defense and goalie. The players were put into three teams based on points, with the honorable mention selections determined by players who received multiple votes but not as many those in the first, second and third teams.
