This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: April 14
April 14, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILLÂ - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.Â
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2017 and 2018 for a series opening win against State at the Bosh and for a road ACC series won all in one day. Plus quick hits from 2007, 2012, 2013, and 2015!
On April 14, 2017 the Heels started the second half of ACC play having won their first five series. They hoped to continue that streak playing at home against the Wolfpack. It started as a pitchers duel. JB Bukauskas threw a 1-2-3 1st, allowed just a walk each in the 2nd and 3rd, and then continued with 1-2-3 innings in the 4th and 5th.
Even though JB had a no hitter through five he didn't have the lead because the N.C. State starter was doing almost as well. The Pack strung 3 hits together in the top of the 6th and took a 1-0 advantage.
That seemed to bring the Heels bats to life. In the bottom of the inning, Logan Warmoth singled and with two outs Kyle Datres went deep to left to bring him around and take a 2-1 lead.
JB threw a scoreless 7th and finished his day having thrown 7 innings, struck out 6, and allowed just 4 hits and a single run.Â
In the bottom of the 7th, Tyler Lynn hit a lead off single and moved to 2nd on a bunt by Cody Roberts. Michael Busch drew a walk to put two runners on and then Brian Miller singled in Tyler and Logan Warmoth singled in Michael to score a pair of runs. Ashton McGee hit a grounder to 3rd that brought around Brian and all the sudden the Heels lead was 5-1.
Rodney Hutchison threw a scoreless 8th and in the bottom half Brandon Riley hit a leadoff single. After a pair of outs that didn't advance him, he stole second in hopes that a 2 out hit would then bring him around. Cody Roberts' two-out hit most certainly did bring him around- he went deep to left to grow the advantage to 7-1.
In the top of the 9th State loaded the bases with nobody out and it seemed like they might have a chance to come back. Josh Hiatt came in and shut the door on that thought. After a groundout that brought in a run he struck out the next hitter and drew a fly out from the last one for a 7-2 Heels victory to open up the series.
Logan Warmoth had four hits, Brandon Riley had three hits, and JB pushed his record for the season to 6-0 with his dominant start.Â
On April 14, 2018 the Heels faced a doubleheader with Virginia after getting shutout in the series opener 4-0. It had been six years since last winning in Charlottesville and it was going to be a pretty tall order to change that.
Dallas Tessar bunted for a single to lead off the game and Michael Busch followed with a single. Kyle Datres hit a sac fly that moved them both up a base and Brandon Riley hit a grounder that brought around Dallas. With two outs Ike Freeman singled to right on the first pitch he saw and the Heels led 2-0.
Virginia got one back in the bottom of the 1st. In the top of the 3rd Dallas continued his strong start to the day by going deep to left. Michael Busch and Brandon Riley followed with singles and moved up to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch with one out. Ike had his second straight RBI single to bring in Michael and Cody Roberts successfully squeezed to bring in Brandon and make it an early 5-1 Heels advantage.
After giving up a run in the 1st Austin Bergner was pretty dialed in for the Heels, throwing a scoreless 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. The Hoos got a couple back in the 6th but Austin then closed out his day with a 1-2-3 7th. His final line was a solid seven innings, five hits, no walks, and he left with a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the 8th Ashton McGee singled with one out and Zack Gahagan followed with another single to get Ashton to 3rd. Clemente Inclan hit a sac fly to left to bring in Ashton and the lead was back to 6-3.
Then things kind of fell apart in the bottom of the 8th. Virginia scored three runs to tie it, and still had runners on 1st and 2nd with one out when Brett Daniels took the mound. Brett saved the day- on his very first pitch he drew a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning and send the game to the 9th.
Kyle Datres led off the inning with a single and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. Ike Freeman singled down the left line, and Coach Forbes sent Kyle home. He was safe at the plate and Ike was able to move to 2nd on the throw. That became key because Cody Roberts singled to right and Ike was able to come around and score thanks to the extra base he'd taken on the previous play.
The Heels went to the bottom of the 9th with an 8-6 lead. Brett didn't mess around, retiring the Hoos without a hit for the win, pushing his record on the season to 6-0. Dallas Tessar, Michael Busch, and Ike Freeman each had 3 hit games, with each of Ike's driving in a run. Zack Gahagan had a pair of hits as well.
The game lasted three and a half hours and there was another one still to be played. Coming all the way back to tie the game and immediately losing anyway may have drained Virginia though. In the second half of the DH the Heels came right out and scored four in the first, scored another four in the 4th after Virginia had cut it to 4-2, and closed out the 12-6 win with a 3rd 4 run inning in the 9th.
Michael Busch got it all started with a home run in the 1st. A key to the Heels offense in this game was patience- they had 10 hits but they also drew 10 walks and four HBP's. The biggest hits were a pair of triples- Brandon Riley hit one that cleared the bases, and Ashton McGee's drove in two. Zack Gahagan and Cody Roberts both had a pair of hits.
Joey Lancellotti got the win in relief with three scoreless, hitless innings and Brett Daniels finished it out with two solid innings to get a save to go along with his win in the first game of the day.Â
The games took a combined seven hours and 24 minutes but it was a happy ride home after the program's first series win in Charlottesville in six years.
And quick hits from 2007, 2012, 2013, and 2015:
-In 2007 the Heels clinched the series win over Duke with a 7-4 win at the Bosh. Josh Horton (including a home run and two RBI), Garrett Gore (including a double and two RBI), Dustin Ackley (including a double and 2 runs scored), and Tim Federowicz (including a double) all had multi hit games.
Adam Warren started and threw five solid innings but left the game with it tied at two. The Heels scored a pair in the bottom of the 5th to get the lead and then Andrew Carignan threw three scoreless innings to maintain the lead and ensure the win for Adam.
-In 2012 the Heels beat Virginia 6-2 to clinch the series in Charlottesville. That was a big deal on a couple fronts- we had gotten swept the weekend before in Miami and we had also gotten swept the last time we had gone to Virginia- so winning the series on Saturday was a big morale boost.Â
Adam Griffin (including a triple), Chaz Frank (driving in a pair of runs), and Shell McCain all had multi hit games. Hobbs Johnson came in with runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out in the 3rd and set down the side in order. Chris McCue came in with the bases loaded and two outs in the 4th and got the final out of the inning before also throwing a scoreless 5th. R.C. Orlan came in after that and got the win for 2.2 innings where he gave up just a single run, and Michael Morin closed it out with 1.1 scoreless hitless innings. It was a pretty effective staff day.
-In 2013 the Heels finished their road sweep at a Virginia Tech team that ended up hosting a regional, 3-0. Hobbs Johnson threw six scoreless innings and allowed only 2 hits. Trevor Kelley replaced him and went 2.1 innings and allowed only a single hit, and Tate Parrish came in and struck out the last two hitters of the game to get the save and cap a combined three-hitter for the staff.
In the 6th Brian Holberton singled, moved around on a pair of productive outs, and came in on a two out Parks Jordan single for the first run of the game. In the 7th Chaz Frank singled and stole 2nd, Landon Lassiter walked, Colin singled to bring in Chaz, and Holbie singled to bring in Landon. He was the only Heel with multiple hits that day and we didn't have any extra base hits but with the pitching on point that was enough. The win pushed the Heels record to 34-2 on the season.
-In 2015 the Heels had a rare complete game midweek shutout from Hunter Williams in a 1-0 win over High Point...although granted the game only went 6 innings because of rain. Hunter struck out 7, only allowed 3 hits, and didn't walk anyone- the outing may have been the high point of his Tar Heel career.
The Heels only had 3 hits for the day themselves- but 2 of them came back to back on doubles by Alex Raburn and Korey Dunbar in the 2nd inning and with Hunter's fine pitching that was enough.Â
