April 2, 2020 | Women's Gymnastics
DURHAM, N.H. – The East Atlantic Gymnastics League announced North Carolina's Martina Ballen has been named the 2020 EAGL Administrator of the Year on Thursday April 2.
Ballen serves as the Tar Heels' Senior Associate Athletic Director of Business and Chief Financial Officer. She also serves as the Gymnastics Team Sport Supervisor for UNC and has been a tremendous advocate for the program at Chapel Hill.
"Martina has been a tremendous advocate for our gymnastics program," head coach Derek Galvin said. "She has been instrumental in gaining support for the gymnastics program in recent years, and she played a critical role in the lead-up to hosting the 2020 EAGL Championships. Unfortunately, the current circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 virus have prevented the EAGL teams and fans from enjoying the benefits of the staff and administrator's efforts in preparing for the meet."
Ballen graduated from Carolina in 1980 with a degree in business administration. She went on to earn her master of business administration from Wake Forest in 1984.
Ballen started at UNC as Director of Finance in 1987 and in 1992 was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Business and Finance. She was then promoted to Associate Director in 1995 and Senior Associate in 2001. In 2011 she was named Chief Financial Officer.
Before coming to Carolina, she worked as a deputy clerk in the U.S. District Court in Raleigh (1980-82) and as a branch manager and commercial loan officer for NCNB (1985-87).
A native of Southern Pines, N.C., Ballen captained her high school basketball team and was elected homecoming queen both in high school and at UNC.
She and her husband, Dwayne, have two sons, Julian and Jared.
Ballen was recognized in 2011 with the Harvey Elliott Beech Outstanding Alumni Award. She is the immediate past chair of the board of directors of the Autism Society of North Carolina and a passionate advocate for autism awareness.
