Top Moments Of 2019-20: Comeback Win At Wake
April 2, 2020 | Women's Tennis
This is the second installment in the series on GoHeels.com looking back at the top moments of the shortened 2019-20 North Carolina women's tennis season. When Carolina Athletics canceled all spring competitions in accordance with the ACC's decision on March 17 due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, North Carolina was in the midst of putting together perhaps the best season in program history. The Tar Heels were No. 1 in the national polls with a perfect 18-0 record, had already won team and singles ITA National Championships and sat atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. Please continue to visit GoHeels.com as we look back on the amazing accomplishments head coach Brian Kalbas and his program enjoyed this past season.
Nobody expected March 8 at No. 14 Wake Forest would be the final match of the 2020 season. In fact, the closing sentence of that day's recap here on GoHeels.com said, "Carolina will have an extended break before returning to the courts…" That break was in reference to the Heels having 13 days off between matches as the university was going on its spring break during that time frame. The team headed to the Bahamas for some fun and sun before heading into the stretch run of what was building up to be another historic season.
Little did we know that the aforementioned "extended break" would end up being much, much longer when the novel coronavirus wiped out all of collegiate athletics for the remainder of the spring.
With that all said, let's swing our focus back to the match in Winston-Salem.
Yes, the Tar Heels would notch its 17th straight victory over the Demon Deacons, but the Heels were forced to make a rare comeback after dropping the doubles point for the first time all season. In fact, it was the first time Carolina coughed up the doubles point in the regular season since March 24, 2017 against Georgia Tech.
Everything seemed in place for the Heels when No. 4 Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham quickly earned a 6-0 shutout of fellow top 10 tandem Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith on court one. However, the Deacs had the last word in securing the doubles point of the match from Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Carolyn Campana and Chandler Carter earned their highest ranked win of the season by taking down UNC's No. 15 tandem of Makenna Jones and Alle Sanford on court two. Not long after, court three went to Wake by virtue of a 6-4 win.
Though Wake Forest took early leads in three singles matches, once Carolina got its mojo back the singles became a one-sided affair in favor of the visitors. Daavetilla laid down the first point with her 18th straight win to knot the score at 1-all.
No. 6 Cameron Morra followed suite with one of UNC's four straight-set victories on the afternoon. Now with the lead for the first time thanks to Morra, the Tar Heels cruised to victory when freshman Anika Yarlagadda and No. 51 Alle Sanford clinched it officially, while No. 3 Graham and No. 52 Jones rounding out the day with wins in three sets.
