First Time Multiple Men's Golf All-Americas in 127 Seasons
University of North Carolina men's golfers Ryan Burnett and Ryan Gerard earned honorable mention All-America honors from PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Â
This marks the first time in 17 seasons multiple Tar Heel men's golfers earned All-America honors in the same season.
Â
Burnett and Gerard rank one-two in UNC career stroke averages at 71.45 and 71.82 respectively. Prior to the season ending after eight tournaments due to the pandemic they were also on pace to shoot the lowest stroke averages in a season in school history.
Â
Burnett, a sophomore from Lafayette, Calif., averaged 70.21 strokes this season. He shot 17 of his 24 rounds at par or better, including 11 rounds in the 60s. He was a combined 28 under par, which helped him win once, finish second twice and third once.
Â
Gerard, a junior from Raleigh, averaged 71.08 in eight events, which propelled him to two fourth-place finishes among five times in the top seven. He shot a cumulative seven strokes below par for the season.
Â
They led Carolina to two team titles (Turning Stone Invitational in Verona, N.Y., and the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and three other top-four performances.
Â
The Tar Heels finished the season ranked No. 13 by Golfweek, 16 by the Golf Coaches and 17 by Golfstat. It's the fourth straight season UNC finished in the top 20 either in the NCAA Championship or polls.
Â
"Everyone associated with Carolina Golf is thrilled for both Ryans," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "While their individual games are different, they have both improved each year they've been at Carolina and are both extremely competitive. They've earned the right to be considered among the nation's best golfers and to be All-Americas. The best part for our program is that they, and our entire team, will be back next season and will be even hungrier for more success."
