This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: April 24
April 24, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.
April 24
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2007 and 2011 for a blowout of ECU at the Bosh, and a much needed win over Miami that got the season back on the right track. Plus quick hits from 2009, 2013, and 2015.
UNC and ECU have played a lot of intense and closely fought games over the years. The Pirates' second trip to the Bosh in 2007 probably tops them all, and we'll get there in June. But their first match on April 24th, 2007...was not so closely fought.
Adam Warren, a native of eastern North Carolina himself, started for the Heels. That's an opportunity to reflect on just how absurd our pitching depth was in 2007- we had someone who's been a successful big leaguer for 8 years now pitching in the middle of the week, even as a sophomore.
Adam was on pretty much every time out that season, but he was really on this particular night. In both the 1st and 2nd he gave up a 2 out single before retiring the side. The Pirates would only get one more hit the rest of the day.
In the bottom of the 2nd Chad Flack doubled with one out but the next batter was retired to make it two down.
Then Benji Johnson singled to bring in Chad, and moved up to 2nd on an error on the play. And Tim Fedroff singled to bring in Benji. And Reid Fronk singled to put a pair of runners on. And Seth Williams doubled to bring in Tim and Reid. And Dustin Ackley singled to bring in Seth. And just like that the Heels led 5-0, all scored with 2 outs.
Adam threw a scoreless 3rd. In the bottom half the offense got going again. Josh Horton singled, then Chad Flack singled, then Benji Johnson walked to load the bases. Tim Fedroff struck the big blow with a triple to right center that brought them all home. He eventually came around on an error and the Heels led 9-0...in the 3rd inning.
Adam threw a 1-2-3 4th. And a scoreless 5th. And a 1-2-3 6th. And after ECU got their third single of the day to lead off the 7th, he retired the side in order to finish his day with 7 scoreless innings pitched and only 3 scattered singles allowed.
4 out of 5 ECU base runners reached with 2 out, and only one all day even got as far as 2nd. And keep in mind this ECU squad could HIT- they averaged almost 7 runs a game for the season.
The win pushed Adam's record to 8-0 and he ended up finishing the season 12-0 with a 2.17 ERA. Pretty hard to beat that for a midweek starter.
Tyler Trice came in to pitch the last couple innings...and if anything he might have been even tougher than Adam. He retired all 6 hitters he faced to close it out, and a Bryan Steed solo shot in the 8th gave the Heels a nice round 10-0 final margin of victory.
Tim Fedroff (including his big triple and 4 RBI), Seth Williams (including a double and 2 RBI), and Chad Flack (including a double that got all the scoring started) each had a pair of hits for the Heels.
The previous week had been a little tough- a midweek loss to Campbell and then a series loss in Tallahassee. But this game provided a pretty emphatic start to a rivalry week that was going to be capped with a visit to NC State.
When the Heels took on Miami at the Bosh on April 24, 2011 they were in a pretty unusual situation on a couple of different fronts. They had lost 5 ACC games in a row- swept by NC State the previous weekend, and losing a doubleheader to Miami at home the day before. That stretch put them pretty firmly on the wrong side of the national seed bubble.
It was also a very unusual place for that team to be rebounding from a bad day at the Bosh. Coming into the DH against Miami on Saturday they'd only lost 1 home game all year and that tally was tripled in one day. The home loss total also stayed at 3 for the rest of the season because we won our remaining 15 home games, for probably the most dominant season we've ever had at the Bosh.
The road back to Omaha started that Sunday against Miami. Kent Emanuel threw a 1-2-3 1st and in the bottom half the bats got right to it. With 2 outs Colin Moran singled and Coach Jesse Wierzbicki reached on a walk. Chaz Frank doubled down the right field line to bring them both in and on the very next pitch Jacob Stallings singled to score Chaz and make it an early 3-0 lead.
Kent threw a scoreless 2nd. In the bottom half Tom Zengel singled, Brian Holberton bunted him over, and Tommy Coyle reached on a walk. With 2 outs Colin Moran singled in Tom and then Tommy came around on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
Kent threw a 1-2-3 3rd. And a scoreless 4th. And a scoreless 5th. In the bottom of the inning Jacob Stallings singled, went to 2nd on a balk, moved to 3rd on a Ben Bunting bunt, and came home on a Tom Zengel sac fly that made it 6-0.
Miami finally got a run in the top of the 6th. So the Heels just came back with 2 in the bottom half of the inning. Tommy Coyle hit a leadoff double and then Levi Michael doubled too to bring him home. A deep fly ball by Colin Moran moved Levi up to 3rd and a sac fly by Jesse Wierzbicki brought him home to make it 8-1.
Kent threw a scoreless 7th. And a 1-2-3 8th. And a scoreless 9th to finish a complete game, 1 run outing to get the Heels a much needed notch in the win column. And also to send the fans home happy from the Bosh- something that happened all but 2 days that entire season.
Colin Moran and Jacob Stallings each had a pair of hits. It was a very well balanced day at the plate for the Heels with 7 of 9 starters scoring a run and 6 of 9 starters driving in a run.
And quick hits from 2009, 2013, and 2015:
-In 2009 the Heels opened up a home series against Maryland at the Bosh with a 7-4 win. Mark Fleury (including a home run and 3 RBI), Kyle Seager (including a home run and 3 RBI), and Ryan Graepel each had a pair of hits.
Alex White threw the first 6.2 innings and got the win to push his record on the season to 7-1. Brian Moran came on with a runner on 3rd in the 7th and struck him out to end the inning. Then he threw a 1-2-3 8th with 2 strikeouts and a 1-2-3 9th with 2 strikeouts to get the save for his 7 up, 7 down, 5 K's performance.
-In 2013 the Heels were coming off their third loss of the season the previous night. I know off the top of my head they won their next game because one of the amazing achievements of that team is they never once lost two games in a row. They came back strong with a 10-2 win over Charlotte to push the season record to 40-3.
Colin Moran led the way with 3 hits, driving in a pair of runs. Chaz Frank had a pair of doubles and drove in 3 runs, and Cody Stubbs' pair of hits drove in 4. Mike Zolk also scored a couple runs after reaching on a hit and a walk.
Reilly Hovis got the first win of his Carolina career for going 5 innings where he struck out 5 and allowed just 3 hits and a run. Trevor Kelley retired all 6 batters he faced in the 6th and 7th and Mason McCullough threw a 1-2-3 9th to close it out.
-In 2015 the Heels beat Boston College 1-0 thanks to a Zac Gallen masterpiece. He threw a complete game shut out, striking out 8, and allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks. He retired the first 8 hitters of the game, allowed a 2 out single in the 3rd, retired the next 7 hitters, allowed a lead off single in the 6th, and then retired the next 10 hitters to get to 1 out in the 9th. The Eagles then got 3 of their 5 base runners for the whole game with a walk, a single, and a walk but Zac got a grounder to 1st to close out a remarkable night at the office.
He needed to be that strong because the Eagles pitcher threw a complete game too- 2 hours and 12 minutes for a college baseball game with no pitching changes in case you were wondering! The Heels got their 1 run in the 2nd when Tyler Ramirez singled and stole 2nd, Joe Dudek walked, Eli Sutherland singled to load the bases, and Logan Warmoth drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Tyler. Thanks to Zac, that was enough.
