Tar Heels Lead All Public Schools in the ACC Again
Seven University of North Carolina athletic programs earned perfect 1000s in Academic Progress Rates and received recognition awards from the NCAA, the third most recognition awards in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the most among public institutions in the ACC.
This is the fourth consecutive year the Tar Heels have the most awards among public schools in the ACC. Overall, Carolina is tied for ninth among all schools in the Power 5 conferences and tie for fourth among public universities in the Power 5 (which includes the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12 and Southeastern Conference).
The APR measures a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation. This year's awards are based on multi-year rates from data including 2015-16 to 2018-19.
Carolina's seven teams to earn the award this year include women's fencing, men's golf, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, women's swimming and diving and women's tennis. Tar Heel teams have won 104 public recognition awards in the 15-year history of the APR.
This is the 15th time in as many years the women's fencing team has won the award. Women's tennis earned its seventh consecutive honor, women's swimming and diving won for the fifth time, men's soccer for the fourth straight year, men's golf for the third year in a row, women's lacrosse for the second time in three years and women's soccer for the second consecutive year.
