This Day In Tar Heel Baseball History: May 2
May 2, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina will begin to look at "On This Day in Tar Heel History", as Tom Jensen will share his memories as an avid Tar Heel fan and regular at Boshamer Stadium.
May 2
For today's version of 'This Day in Recent Carolina Baseball History' we go back to 2012 and 2017 for a memorable return from an injury and a midweek walkoff win at the Bosh.
On May 2, 2012 the Heels were hosting Winthrop at the Bosh and there was an air of excitement around the game because Colin Moran was back! He'd suffered a hand injury in March and although the Heels still did pretty well during the 5 weeks he was out, it's a lot better to have your best hitter than not!
Hobbs Johnson was on the bump for the Heels and threw a scoreless 1st, striking out a pair of Eagles.
Chaz Frank led off for the Heels and drew a walk and then stole 2nd. That brought up Colin for his first at bat in over a month and he singled through the left side, bringing Chaz home to give the Heels a 1-0 lead.
Hobbs threw a scoreless 2nd. And a scoreless 3rd with a pair of strikeouts. And a 1-2-3 4th. He finished his day having gone 4 scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts while allowing only a pair of hits and walking no one. He would earn his 3rd win of the season.
In the top of the 5th Winthrop got the tying run to 3rd with 2 outs. Tate Parrish came in and struck out the only batter he faced swinging to preserve the lead. Chris McCue came in for the 6th and threw a 1-2-3 inning.
Colin Moran was back up to lead off the 6th and if he hadn't already signaled that he was back with his RBI single to take the lead in the 1st, he did it now. He knocked one out of the park to right to grow the Heels lead to 2-0.
The Heels went to R.C. Orlan in the 7th inning of what was still a close game. They went to R.C. most games in 2012- he appeared in 38 out of 62.
R.C. had appeared in a whole lot of games his sophomore year too- 32. But even with that many appearances, he only threw 19 innings all year. He was mostly coming in to face a lefty or two.
It was a different story his junior year- he threw 57 innings across his 38 appearances because he'd become such a reliable pitcher that the coaches knew they could rely on him to get anyone out, that he didn't need to be a lefty specialist.
He had just a 2.21 ERA over those 57 innings where he struck out 66 and ended up leading the team in wins with 8 that season- pretty impressive for a middle reliever.
Earlier this week I reflected on how huge Brett Daniels was in that role for the team later in the decade. R.C.- who never started a game and never saved a game in his career- made a huge contribution to the team's success in that role in this earlier part of the decade, especially as a lefty.
R.C. ended up making it to AAA in a 7 year professional career, he played for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic...and he came back and got his degree from the University of North Carolina.
Anyway this night against Winthrop was pretty typical of RC's last season as a Tar Heel. He threw a 1-2-3 7th and got the first couple outs in the 8th before giving way to Michael Morin.
Michael got out of the inning with a foul out and after allowing a leadoff single in the 9th he got a fly out and then a double play to end it to earn his 11th save of the season. The Heels pitchers combined for a 4 hit shutout over the course of the game, striking out 8 and walking only 1.
Winthrop's pitching was pretty impressive- they're only gave up 5 hits. But Colin's 2 run scoring hits in his return- including a home run- were enough. Jacob Stallings, Tommy Coyle, and Chaz Frank had the other hits for the Heels.
On May 2, 2017 the Heels hosted Richmond at the Bosh, hoping to continue the momentum from their sweep over top 5 Clemson the previous weekend. Tyler Baum started and threw a scoreless 1st.
In the bottom of the inning Logan Warmoth singled with 1 out and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. Tyler Lynn- who had driven in all the runs for the Heels in the sweep clincher on Sunday- kept that streak going with a double to bring Logan home and make it 1-0.
Tyler threw a 1-2-3 2nd with a pair of strikeouts. In the 3rd the Spiders got a couple runners on base and Tyler fell behind 3-0 but then worked his way back with a couple strikes and got a groundout to end the inning unscathed. He followed that up with a 1-2-3 4th.
In the bottom of the 4th the Heels extended their lead. Cody Roberts bunted for a single on the first pitch of the inning- something Richmond probably wasn't ready for from the opposing catcher. Zack Gahagan got hit by a pitch and Michael Busch worked a walk to load the bases with nobody out. A Brandon Martorano single scored Cody and a Logan Warmoth sac fly scored Zack and the Heels led 3-0.
But then in the top of the 5th Richmond scored 3 runs to tie it up. Austin Bergner threw a 1-2-3 6th but then the Spiders got a run in the 7th to take a 4-3 lead.
The Heels bats were pretty cold- they didn't get a hit in the 5th, 6th, or 7th innings. Rodney Hutchison capped a 1-2-3 8th with a strikeout to keep the deficit at a run.
In the bottom of the 8th Kyle Datres worked a full count, fouled off a couple pitches, and then on the 8th pitch of the at bat doubled to right center to lead off the inning. Following an out Cody Roberts singled to put runners on the corners.
That brought up Zack Gahagan and he delivered a big hit, singling to left to bring around Cody and tie up the game.
Trevor Gay came on to pitch the 9th and got the first couple outs before giving way to Taylor Sugg, who got the last out of the frame and sent the game to the bottom of the 9th.
Sometimes you win walkoffs thanks to majestic home runs or drawing 13 pitch walks or exciting plays at the plate.
And sometimes you just get them because of a bunch of errors. Brian Miller drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 9th. Logan Warmoth hit the ball to short and the fielder went to 2nd to try to get the lead runner and instead he threw it away, allowing Brian to get to 3rd and Logan to 2nd. The Spiders intentionally walked Tyler Lynn to load the bases with nobody out.
Kyle Datres had another good long at bat, working a full count and fouling off a pitch. On the 7th pitch of the at bat he hit a pretty catchable ball to right...and the fielder just didn't catch it. The error allowed Brian to come in and score and gave the Heels the 6th of what would become a 9 game winning streak.
Taylor Sugg got the first win of his Tar Heel career for retiring the final batter in the 9th. Cody Roberts was the only Heel with multiple hits on the day. Doubles by Kyle Datres and Tyler Lynn were crucial to tying the game in the 8th and taking the early lead in the 1st.
