Top Moments Of 2019-20: Soendergaard & Kiger Reach Fall ITA Semifinals

When Carolina Athletics canceled all spring competitions on March 17, 2020, in accordance with the Atlantic Coast Conference's decision due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, its men's tennis team was in the middle of possibly the best season in program history. The Tar Heels were ranked No. 2 in the ITA national rankings with a 12-1 record and sat atop the ACC standings. The team reached the finals of the ITA Indoor National Championships in Madison, Wisc., in February, beating the No. 1 team in the nation along the way.

Signs began to appear early that the 2019-20 season could be a special one for the Tar Heels when Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard made a dominant doubles run in the fall at the ITA Fall Regional and National Championships. Those promising signs came to fruition in the spring, when the pairÂ
Kiger and Soendergaard first won the ITA Carolinas Regional in Cary, then advanced all the way to the semifinals of the national event in Newport Beach, Calif.
The pair saw its run at the 2019 Oracle ITA Fall National Championships come to an end when they fell to No. 8 seed Robert Cash and John McNally of Ohio State, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (6), at The Tennis Club at Newport Beach.
Kiger and Soendergaard had won their first three matches in Newport Beach, including upsetting top-seeded Jack Lin and Jackie Tang of Columbia in the first round.
Two weeks earlier in Cary, came from behind to win a thrilling ITA Carolina Regional doubles championship, beating Furman's Jake Bhangdia and Jake Munns in the final at the Cary Tennis Center. After losing the first set, 6-7 (4), Soendergaard and Kiger won the second set, 6-4, and the third by a score of 10-7.
