June 14, 2020 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – Gianluca Dalatri has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an undrafted free agent, the organization announced today.
With limited work throughout his career as a Tar Heel due to injury, Dalatri has been impressive on the mound during his time at North Carolina.
The hurler did not see any time on the mound in 2020.
In 2019, he went 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA before missing the rest of the season due to injury. He struck out a season-high nine batters against South Florida before fanning eight in 6.2 innings of work against Clemson.
During the 2018, Dalatri was slated as the Friday starter, and after two appearances, missed three months because of injury. He finished the season with a 2-2 record while he sported a 3.33 ERA in seven outings.
He saw his most time on the bump during his freshman campaign, where he was featured as the Saturday starter for the Tar Heels. He finished the season with a 7-3 record, a 3.34 ERA and 85 strikeouts. He threw 97 innings in 2017, a team-high. After his performance during his freshman season, he was named a consensus first-team Freshman All-America while also collecting third-team All-ACC and freshman All-ACC honors.
The 2020 draft concluded on Thursday, June 11, with organizations allowed to offer free agent contracts beginning on Sunday.
