Litynski Nominated For NCAA Award
July 14, 2020 | Fencing, Academics
Jackie Litynski, who graduated from North Carolina in May after four years on the women's fencing team, is UNC's nominee for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
The honor was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
A record 605 student-athletes were nominated across all three NCAA divisions, including 259 from Division I schools. Litynski is one of two fencers named to the list, which includes representative from 24 sports.

Litynski, a sabre fencer from Niskayuna, N.Y., graduated with a double major in public policy and environmental sciences. She was honored as one of UNC's Top 10 Scholar-Athletes and was a four-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team member.
"Jackie truly is a special person," UNC coach Matt Jednak said. "She is extremely determined and passionate in everything she does. Her team comes before everything else. She has pushed through a number of obstacles in her career and has grown from each one to be a stronger version of herself.
"Jackie is one of the most cerebral and tactical athletes I have worked with, and had a great career at UNC. As a coach, I am very honored to have had the ability to work with Jackie. She is an amazing teammate, fencer, and student. Selfishly, I am sad to see her graduate, but I am excited to see all of the amazing things she is going to accomplish."
The 2018 ACC Women's Sabre Fencer of the Year, she qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2019.
Litynski studied abroad in Israel in the fall of 2019 and was named to the Dean's List in every semester at UNC. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and contributed extensively to the APPLES Service-Learning program.
Conference offices will select up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. All nominees who compete in a sport not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, will be considered by a selection committee. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.
From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.
