Celebrate Carolina: Ruffin-Pratt Set For Eighth WNBA Season
July 16, 2020 | Women's Basketball
In this week's Celebrate Carolina feature, we focus on Tar Heels in the WNBA. In a summer dominated by COVID, the league is set to begin play on July 25. In preparation for that, teams are in a "bubble" in Bradenton, Fla., practicing for what will be a compacted 22-game season.
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, an eighth-year WNBA veteran, is the lone Tar Heel in the bubble. (Two other active players, LaToya Sanders and Jessica Breland, have opted out of this season, as have many other players.)
Ruffin-Pratt is headed into her second year with the Los Angeles Sparks. In 2019, she started 33 of 34 games, including all four playoff games. She averaged 25.3 minutes, 6.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
She spent the first six years of her career with the Washington Mystics.
Ruffin-Pratt, from Alexandria, Va., played for the Tar Heels from 2009-13. A point guard and defensive standout, scored 1,107 points with 342 assists and 209 steals during her UNC career. As a senior in 2012-13, she averaged a career-best 15.5 points, 4.5 assists and 2.7 steals and earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-ACC Tournament honors.
