The Tar Heels' leader is taking on a new leadership role within women's basketball.
Courtney Banghart, now in her third season as the head coach at the University of North Carolina, has been selected vice president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the organization announced on Thursday.
"This is a pivotal time for our sport as we continue to grow the game and expand our fan base," Banghart said. "I've devoted myself to coaching this sport for more than 20 years and I feel passionately about the WBCA's mission. I'm excited to take on this new role and enthusiastic about what lies ahead for women's basketball."
Banghart will step into the role of WBCA president in July 2023, succeeding UCLA head coach Cori Close. Close moved into the president's role on July 1 to serve a two-year term.
"No one has a better grasp of the challenges facing and opportunities awaiting our association and our sport than Courtney," WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew said. "I look forward to working with her for the next two years as our vice president and then for the following two years as our president."
Long active in the WBCA, Banghart has served on the board since 2015, first as the NCAA Division I East Director and then as the Director at Large. She has been a member of the Oversight Committee and the oversight committee's Ad Hoc Working Group on Recruiting, as well as the WBCA's executive committee, legislative working group, and stewardship working group.
Banghart was honored in 2015 by Fortune Magazine as one of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders.
