Tar Heels Outshoot Panthers, 24-3
Sophomore defender Avery Patterson headed home the only goal of the game with 9:17 to play to give No. 5 North Carolina a 1-0 road win over Pittsburgh Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Carolina outshot the Panthers, 24-3, and took all 11 corner kicks in the game, but it wasn't until UNC's 10th corner of the match before the Tar Heels could get a shot past Pitt keeper Katherine Robinson.
Maggie Pierce's corner found Patterson, who headed the ball off the underside of the cross bar. The ball caromed down off the chest of Panther defender Landy Mertz, but Mertz was inside the goal. Referees checked video to confirm the ball crossed the goal line and after a short review confirmed the goal for Patterson, her fourth of the season.
Carolina improves to 9-1-2 overall, 2-1-2 in the ACC, while the Panthers fall to 8-5, 1-4 in league play.
The Tar Heels had 15 shots in the second half, when Robinson and her defensive teammates combined to make seven of their nine saves.
With 37:15 to play, Patterson launched a free kick that Robinson saved by leaping high and redirecting the ball off the cross bar. Six minutes later she stuck out her left hand to stop a Lauren Wrigley shot from 10 yards out.
Pitt's best chance of the evening came with 27:00 to play when Athalie Polomo's free kick sailed just over the bar.
Two minutes after Patterson gave the Tar Heels the lead, Robinson made a save on a point blank shot by Isabel Cox.
Carolina outshot the Panthers, 9-2, in the opening half. The Tar Heels created several scoring chances, the best of which came with 16 minutes to play. Emily Colton's shot was stopped by Robinson with a diving, two-handed save. On the resulting corner kick, the ball ricocheted off Abby Allen across the goal and hit the left post.
The shutout was Carolina's and goalkeeper Claudia Dickey's sixth of the season and third in as many games.
The Tar Heels return to action Sunday at Boston College at 1 p.m.
