February 11, 2021 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina men's tennis team will open play at the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championships on Friday against Tennessee.  The University of Illinois is hosting the event in Champaign, Ill.
The second-seeded Tar Heels will meet the seventh-seeded Volunteers at 1 p.m. Eastern (noon in Champaign). Tennessee won a pair of matches in Raleigh, N.C., to advance to the quarterfinals, first beating Duke and then topping NC State on the road.
Friday's winner will advance to Saturday's semifinals to meet the winner of the match between No. 3 seed TCU and No. 6 Virginia. Follow along during the match with the live stream or live scoring.
The Tar Heels are seeking their second ITA Indoor championship, having beaten Virginia to win the event in 2016, and their second consecutive appearance in the championship match. Carolina has reached at least the semifinals in four of the last five years.Â
UNC (3-0) advanced to the 2021 quarterfinals with a pair of wins at home on January 24 and 25 against Northwestern and South Carolina.Â
Carolina was the runner-up in the 2020 National Team Indoors, beating South Carolina in the round of 16, Florida in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Ohio State in the semifinals. USC won last year's championship match, 4-1, over the Tar Heels.
UNC's 2021 roster returns all of its starters in both singles and doubles from last year's team and has added a talented, three-man freshman class. Five seniors play key roles up and down the lineup: William Blumberg, Mac Kiger, Josh Peck, Benjamin Sigouin and Simon Soendergaard. Blumberg, Kiger, Sigouin and Soendergaard all have earned All-America honors in the past, as has junior Brian Cernoch (in doubles in 2020).
The 46th edition of DI Men's Indoors is a single-elimination tournament with the national champion being crowned on Sunday, February 14th. Â Friday's quarterfinal is below.
