February 28, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Jamie Ortega broke the North Carolina career goals scored record on Sunday, leading the No. 1-ranked Tar Heels to a 17-6 win over No. 25 Vanderbilt at Dorrance Field.
Ortega scored four goals to run her career total to 199, one more than the previous record of 198 set by Abbey Friend from 2011-14. She also added three assists for a game-high seven points. Ortega has team highs with 26 points, 16 goals and a shooting percentage of .571 through five games in 2021.
"To be honest, I really didn't know I was even close to breaking the record until a couple of my teammates told me," Ortega said after the game. "Once I broke the record, I was reflecting on all my years here and how far everyone on this team has come. Each year, I appreciate my teammates more and more. Yes, I'm the one that broke the record, but it's such a team accomplishment."
Scottie Rose Growney added four goals and one assist for the Tar Heels, and Katie Hoeg ran the offense efficiently, finishing with two goals and three assists.
Eight different Tar Heels scored goals in a balanced attack that saw UNC out-shoot the Commodores, 45-18. Tayler Warehime and Melissa Sconone both scored twice, while Kerrigan Miller added a goal and an assist. Ally Mastroianni and Catie Woodruff each scored goals as well. Woodruff, a graduate student defender, scored her first career goal on her first career shot attempt. Nicole Humphrey and Caitlyn Wurzburger both had assists.
Carolina improved to 5-0 this season and held its fifth opponent in a row to single-digit goals. Fifth-ranked Stony Brook scored a season-high seven goals against the UNC defense in the season opener on Feb. 14. No other opponent has scored more than six goals. The Tar Heels forced a season-high 17 turnovers.
Taylor Moreno improved to 5-0 in goal this season for Carolina, making one save and allowing four goals in 39:01 minutes of action while also gathering two ground balls. Kimber Hower played the final 20:59 in the cage, making three saves and allowing two goals. Paige Gunning (2-2) went the distance in goal for Vandy and made 13 saves.
Carolina will return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Boston College in the last installment of a six-game homestand to start the 2021 season.
