Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away From BC, 21-9
March 6, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—North Carolina ripped off a 7-0 run to start the second half and scored a season-high 21 goals, pulling away to beat 11th-ranked Boston College, 21-9, on Saturday at Dorrance Field.
Jamie Ortega led the way with a game-high six goals for Carolina, which won its 13th consecutive game dating to last year and improved to 6-0 in 2021, including 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Eagles fell to 3-1, 0-1.
Carolina out-shot the Eagles, 41-20. Eight different Tar Heels scored goals with five having three goals or more.
Aside from Ortega's six goals, Scottie Rose Growney had three goals and three assists and Ally Mastroianni had three goals and six draw controls. Tayler Warehime and Kerrigan Miller each also tallied hat tricks. Katie Hoeg dished out three assists, Elizabeth Hillman had a goal and an assist and Emily Nalls and Nicole Humphrey scored single goals.
Charlotte North led the Eagles with three goals and eight draw controls.
Taylor Moreno and the UNC defense limited BC to just two second-half goals. Moreno (6-0) made nine saves on the day. Rachel Hall went the distance in goal for the Eagles, making six saves.
"I'm really happy with how our team performed today," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "It's really nice to play in some dry weather. BC has a couple of really good players who put pressure on the defense, and I felt like once we adjusted to that we did really well. To hold that team to two goals in the second half defensively was great. We went into the half a man down and held them on a man-down rotation to start the second half, and we held them on a man-up situation again later in the second half. I was happy to see that against a really good team.
"It was really great to see the offense get up and running. We had multiple threats, multiple scorers. But really it was such a team game ... we had eight different scorers plus Katie Hoeg's assists ... just a really hard group to defend if everybody's locked and loaded. That's what we've been working on."
Carolina will return to action with a pair of games next weekend at Virginia Tech on Thursday and Saturday.
Notes:
• Carolina won its 13th consecutive game.
• Jamie Ortega extended her goals streak to 20 consecutive games and posted her 50th career multi-goal game.
• Ortega scored her 200th career goal at the 25:24 mark of the first half, UNC's second goal of the game.
• BC's seven first-half goals matched the most allowed by Carolina in the first five games of the season.
