CHAPEL HILL – After surrendering a two-run home run in the first inning, UNC starter Austin Love was lights-out in No. 18 North Carolina's (8-4, 4-3) 8-3 game one win over Clemson (5-6, 1-3) on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
After giving up the home run to Clemson's fourth batter of the game, Love retired 19 out of the next 21 batters he faced. He ended the night throwing a career-high 7.2 innings, which yielded five hits, three earned runs, no walks, and a career-high 12 strikeouts.
His 12 strikeouts were the most by a Tar Heel pitcher since Tyler Baum fanned 12 vs. South Florida on Feb. 24, 2019 and the most by a UNC pitcher against an ACC foe since Cooper Criswell had 13 on April 7, 2018.
Down 2-0 in the second frame, Brett Centracchio belted a solo home run to lead off the inning. The Tar Heels tied the contest when Danny Serretti doubled to right-center field.
An inning later, the Tar Heels broke the game open behind the same bats that did damage in the previous frame. Centracchio and Serretti each roped RBI triples down the right-field line to push the Tar Heels lead to 6-2.
Clemson cut the lead to three with a sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth inning.
Clemente Inclan provided separation in the seventh inning with a two-run blast to right field. It was his second career home run, and second home run in as many games.
Shawn Rapp tossed the final 1.1 innings for UNC and struck out two while he issued just one walk.
Angel Zarate extended his on-base streak to 32 games and his hitting streak to 11 with a single to center field in the sixth inning.
Justice Thompson and Tomas Frick each recorded a hit for Carolina.
The Tar Heels look to clinch the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
