Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Notre Dame

CHAPEL HILL – Despite a shutout win Friday night, North Carolina lost both games of a doubleheader vs. Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.

The Fighting Irish made adjustments from their Friday loss to blank North Carolina Saturday: 13-0 and 4-0. Led by Abby Sweet's seven hits in the doubleheader, Notre Dame out-hit UNC 17 to six on the day. Kristina Burkhardt extended her reached-base streak to nine with an intentional walk in game one and double in game two.

Notre Dame improves to 9-6, 3-4 in ACC play while Carolina slides to 9-8, 5-3 in conference. The series wraps up Sunday at noon on ACCNX.

» Notre Dame threatened with a leadoff double by Sweet to begin the game but both UNC and the Irish were held scoreless through the first two innings.
» Notre Dame's Katie Marino ended the scoreless game with a two-run home run in the third.
» Shayla Thompson singled through the right side in the third and Destiny Middleton did the same in the fourth.
» The Fight Irish added two home runs in the fourth to up the score to 5-0 as UNC made a pitching change. Notre Dame plated two more runs in the fifth and six in the seventh, highlighted by Sweet's second home run of the game.
» Katie Perkins singled through the left side in the seventh but was unable to spark the offense.
» Notre Dame's Sweet went 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles and home runs in game one.

» Kiersten Licea pinch hit UNC's third hit of the game in the bottom of the frame.
» Brittany Pickett struck out three in her 10th complete game of the season while ND's Alexis Holloway fanned six.
