BOWLING GREEN, OHIO (March 25, 2021) – North Carolina's Elizabeth Culton was named a regular season All-American for the 2021 season, the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association announced Thursday.
Culton, a sophomore from Durham, North Carolina, finished the season with an NQS of 9.950 on balance beam. With an average score of 9.908 and a career high and season high score of 9.950 on the event, Culton finished the season tied for sixth place in the nation.
After posting her career high score of 9.950 in the first two meets of the season, Culton was able to secure the No. 1 ranking in the country on this event for the first three weeks of the competition season. Culton earned a score of 9.950 four times this season and posted a score of 9.900 or higher in seven of nine meets, never scoring below 9.800 on the event.
Culton's impressive score on the balance beam, in addition to her tallies of 9.875 and 9.850 on uneven bars and floor exercise respectively earned her the title of East Atlantic Gymnastics League Specialist of the Week in the first week of competition.
In the final week of competition, Culton was named Gymnastic of the Week by the EAGL conference after scoring a career-high 39.500 in the all-round competition. Her personal best 9.800 on vault, 9.850 on uneven bars, career-high tying 9.950 on balance beam, and career-high 9.900 on floor exercise earned her this title.
Culton's consistent scores on the balance beam helped her team maintain 49.000 average on the event throughout the 2021 season.
This honor is the first All-America accolade received by Culton, the sophomore, after the season's abrupt ending in 2020.
Culton's first team All-American recognition is the first naming to the first team for North Carolina since Courtney Bumpers in 2006, when she was awarded first team All-America her first place position on floor exercise. Bumpers achieved an NQS of 9.945, an average of 9.752, and earned a career-high score of 9.975 that season.
Student-athletes with the top eight National Qualifying Scores (NQS) for the regular season (with ties), for each event plus the all-around earned All-America honors. Second team All-America honors are earned by student-athletes ranked Nos. 9-16 (with ties) in the NQS.
Culton will continue her impressive season in the NCAA Regional in Athens on April 2 at 1 p.m. in the all-around competition.
