Baseball Drops Series to NC State

CHAPEL HILL – Despite a home run in every game of the series, North Carolina dropped the series on NC State on Monday evening at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Wrapping up game two, North Carolina held NC State scoreless in the final inning but dropped a 6-1 decision. The Wolfpack continued into the final game of the series to clinch the finale, 8-3.

Angel Zarate and Caleb Roberts had multi-hit games in the second game while Eric Grintz and Mac Horvath had two hits each in game three.

Carolina slides to 13-9 overall, 8-6 in ACC play while NC State improves to 8-9 on the season, 4-8 in conference.

Up next, Carolina travels to ECU Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch vs. the Pirates.

Game Two: NC State 6, North Carolina 1
NC State took a two-run lead in the second inning after a home run to right-center field. The Wolfpack pushed its advantage to 3-0 after a fielding error by the Tar Heels in the third allowed a run to score.

Zarate hit his second home run of the season in the sixth inning to cut the lead two. NC State took advantage of a fielding error in the seventh to reclaim the three-run lead and extended it to five with a two-run home run in the eighth.

Max Alba started the game for the Tar Heels and took the loss in 2.0 innings. He surrendered three runs on five hits and recorded one strikeout. Shawn Rapp, Gage Gillian, Chris Joyner and Nik Pry combined for the next six innings of work and gave up three runs, one earned, and struck out four.

Davis Palermo did not allow a hit when he took over on the mound to begin the resumed game on Monday. NC State's Sam Highfill earned the win in 7.0 complete innings.

Game Three: NC State 8, North Carolina 3
NC State's momentum continued into game three, jumping to a two-run lead on a pair of hits in the first.

Pry struck out his first batter in the second, but a miscue allowed NC State to extend its lead to five.

Carolina responded in the second as Caleb Roberts doubled to lead off the frame. Grintz sent an RBI-single to center to put UNC on the board. However, the Wolfpack responded in the third with a solo shot by Jose Torres to keep the margin at five runs.

Michael Oh retired the side in the fifth before Hunter Stokely slugged his second home run of the series to right to cut the deficit to four.

However, NC State reclaimed a six-run lead with Austin Murr's two-run home run in the seventh. Grintz responded for Carolina with his second RBI-single of the day to narrow the margin to five.

Will Sandy took the loss in 1.1 innings. Carolina's bullpen struck out four with two apiece from Pry and Oh. NC State's Matt Willadsen earned the win in 7.1 innings.
