Field Hockey's Spring Season Starts Friday
March 4, 2021 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC field hockey team will open its spring season on Friday the same way it finished the fall one: hosting Louisville at Karen Shelton Stadium.
The Tar Heels and Cardinals meet at 1 p.m. Friday. Under current state guidelines for outdoor events, Shelton Stadium capacity will be restricted and only a limited number of seats will be available to the general public. Gates will open at noon, with no fan admission prior to that time.
The game will air live on ACC Network Extra. Click here to watch.
Spring field hockey generally takes the form of scrimmage games, but in this most unusual of years it's the NCAA season. UNC and the rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference competed in the fall, and Carolina capped the season with its 23rd ACC title, claimed with a 4-2 win over Louisville in that final game of the fall, on Nov. 8. But the ACC was the outlier, with most schools waiting until the spring to begin action.
UNC finished the fall 10-1 overall, with the only loss coming at Louisville on Oct. 2. That 3-1 defeat snapped a 47-game Tar Heel winning streak.
The Louisville game is the first of three home games for UNC this spring. The Tar Heels also will host an ACC playoff game for the conference's NCAA automatic bid on April 23. UNC will host the delayed 2020 NCAA Championship on May 7 and 9 at Shelton Stadium.
