Softball Blanks No. 17 South Carolina, Defeats Elon

CHAPEL HILL – Beginning day two of Carolina Classic with a shutout win over No. 17 South Carolina, North Carolina topped the Gamecocks and Elon on Saturday at Anderson Stadium to improve to 3-0 on the weekend and advance to the championship game.

The Tar Heels began day two of the Carolina Classic with a one-hit 3-0 shutout over No. 17 South Carolina. Led by two hits apiece by Kiersten Licea and Bri Stubbs, UNC scattered three runs on 10 hits throughout the game. Brittany Pickett struck out 12 in her sixth win of the season.

Carolina's success continued into the second game as UNC topped Elon, 7-5. Striking out seven in her second win of the season, Hannah George anchored UNC in the circle, keeping the Phoenix off the board through six innings. The Tar Heels scattered 12 hits throughout the game with Kristina Burkhardt and Licea each posted two RBI. Elon plated five runs in the seventh as UNC brought in Pickett who earned the save throwing the final two outs.

UNC improves to 8-5 while South Carolina falls to 11-3 and Elon drops to 2-6.

» Stubbs chopped the ball over the third baseman for a single to lead off the second. However, the Tar Heels got caught in a pickle at home to maintain the one-run lead.
» Stubbs and Katie Perkins led off the fourth with back-to-back base knocks as Burkhardt drove in a second run.

Doubles by George and Burkhardt each plated a run. Greene reached on a fielding error that allowed a run to score before Licea registered her second sac-fly of the game.
» Dominique Monteon and Burkhardt drove in two more runs in the fifth each on a single.
» Elon plated five runs in the seventh highlighted by Gabi Schaal's grand slam.
» Pickett entered in relief to close out the game and earn her first save of the season.
