Rowing Finishes Third at Carolina Cup
March 6, 2021 | Women's Rowing
CLEMSON, S.C.  -- Returning to the race course for the first time in nearly one year, North Carolina opened its 2021 season at Clemson's Carolina Cup Saturday afternoon at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
Â
"It was really great to finally race again," interim co-head coach Thomas Revelle said. "It's been exactly one year since our last race so it was exciting to compete again. We were not as fast as Duke and Clemson, but we learned some things about ourselves as competitors, as a team and as individuals. Today was a building block toward our long-term goal of competing with the best in the ACC. We'll keep working towards getting there. We're not there yet, but our attitude, enthusiasm and intensity for what we're doing as a team has been great."
Â
Winning each race of the day, No. 9 Duke earned 90 points to clinch the Carolina Cup. Clemson finished second with 80 while UNC wrapped up the event with 70.
Â
"I am grateful we were able to make it to race day, and happy to see some freshman row for Carolina for the first time in their careers," interim co-head coach Emilie Gross said. "Overall, we were able to go out and work on our race plan today. It was nice to have a straight 2,000 meters for the first time this season. It's a starting place, but not the space we know we need to be in. We are going to need to put some solid hard work in to hit our goals for this season."
Â
Beginning the day with the 3V8, sophomore coxswain Julia Hunt guided senior Juliana Micchia, senior Lily Brown, sophomore Tianna Van Cura, freshman Becca Lewis, senior Marion Miller, sophomore Hannah Davis freshman Molly Hilemn and sophomore Chloe Hyde in 7:18.9.
Â
Freshman coxswain Lauren Walsh led senior Zoe Rose, junior Sarah Catherine Niles, junior Amelia Locklear and sophomore Jessica Judge down the course in 7:47.9 in the 1V4.
Â
In the 2V8, senior coxswain Ashley Lim paced sophomore Taylor Gregitis, sophomore Jackie Wilhelm, freshman Caroline Lammersen, freshman Gigi Maroney, senior Lindsay Miller, senior Sarah Velarde, junior Sydney Tumey and senior Neeva Wernsman Young to finish in 6:59.5.
Â

Â
"It was really fun to come race, but it was a really long day." Revelle said. "We're still not in normal times with COVID considerations. Making this race a day trip made for a very long day for the team. But at the end of it all, it was great to race as things start to feel more normal. We're grateful for the opportunities we have to compete."
Â
Up next, Carolina travels to Charlottesville, Virginia to race against Tennessee and UCF on March 26.
