Softball Drops Series Opener at No. 18 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Coming off a two-week pause, North Carolina fell short to No. 18 Clemson, 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at McWhorter Stadium.

Although UNC managed to even the score at 1-1 in the fourth on an RBI-single by Taylor Greene, the Tigers rallied for three runs to clinch the first-ever win between the two programs. Both Greene and Brittany Pickett singled in the loss while Pickett also struck out five in the circle.

North Carolina (10-9, 6-4 ACC) and Clemson (23-4, 15-4 ACC) resume the series with a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m.

How it Happened
» Despite a double play to begin the inning, Clemson took a one-run lead in the second on an infield single.
» Carolina knotted the game on a pair of two-out hits in the fourth. Pickett singled to first as Skyler Brooks entered to run and steal second. Greene sent an RBI-single to right that allowed Brooks to score for the 1-1 game.
» The Tigers responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI-double to reclaim the lead.
» Clemson extended the lead to three on a two-run double to center in the fifth.
» Carolina reached on an error in the sixth, but was unable to capitalize.
» Clemson's Valerie Cagle struck out 13 on Thursday evening.
