Tar Heels’ Offense Explodes In 11-5 Win Over Duke

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina (16-13, 10-10) recorded a season-high 14 hits over Duke (13-14, 6-11) on Sunday afternoon to pick up an 11-5 win to even the series on a picture-perfect day on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
After a back-and-forth game through the first seven innings, North Carolina's offense broke through in the eighth inning and posted six runs.
After Dallas Tessar was hit by a pitch, a Caleb Roberts RBI double to center field gave the Tar Heels the lead 6-5. Danny Serretti's 2RBI home run followed, and pushed North Carolina's lead to 8-5.
With one out, Tomas Frick singled through to the right side to keep the Tar Heels pace in the bottom of the eighth. Brett Centracchio followed suit with a single of his own to center field. An RBI double through the left side by Colby Wilkerson pushed the lead to 9-5 for North Carolina with runners on second and third.
Schroeder was able to reach on a fielding error by Duke that plated Centracchio and Wilkerson. The Tar Heels led 11-5 at the end of the eighth inning.
Duke was able to get on the board first in the second inning, scoring two runs on three hits. The Blue Devils led 2-0 in the top of the second.
North Carolina responded in the bottom of the third, tying the game at two runs apiece. Will Schroeder smoked a lead-off double to right-center in his first at-bat of 2021
After Dallas Tessar drew a walk, an RBI single to right-center from Caleb Roberts cut the Duke lead in half. With Tessar on third base and Roberts on first, a fielding error by Duke allowed Tessar to make it home and tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the third.
The momentum shifted back to Duke in the fourth and fifth innings, and the Blue Devils to take a 5-2 lead. North Carolina was unable to capitalize on the opportunities made in the fourth inning but was able to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on three hits.
Tessar singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, followed by a double from Serretti to put them on second and third base respectively. A ground-out RBI from Frick plated Tessar and advanced Serretti to third base, shrinking Duke's lead to 5-3.
Centracchio turned the tide with a two-run blast that tied the game at five runs.
Max Carlson started the game, pitching two full innings. Carlson allowed two runs on three hits and struck out . Shawn Rapp pitched two full innings, allowing one run on four hits. Gage Gillian threw 3.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
Nik Pry earned the win and pitched 1.1 innings with zero runs on one hit.
The series will be decided on Monday, April 12 at 6 p.m. in game three at Boshamer Stadium.
