April 16, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Jamie Ortega and Katie Hoeg posted eight points apiece as top-ranked North Carolina picked up a 20-8 victory over No. 7 Virginia on Friday afternoon at Dorrance Field.  Â
Â
The Tar Heels won their 20th consecutive game, matching the longest streak in school history (17 in a row to end the 2016 season and three in a row to start 2017).
Â
Ortega finished with six goals and two assists, while Hoeg had four goals and four assists. Caitlyn Wurzburger posted season highs with four goals and five points.Â
Â
Tayler Warehime tallied three goals and an assist, and Kerrigan Miller dished out three assists. Ally Mastroianni scored a goal and controlled six draws, and Brooklyn Neumen had two assists.
Â
"We wanted to do a better job than we did offensively last weekend at Notre Dame with finishing the ball," head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "I thought our offensive unit did a really good job going in between the two different defenses they were throwing at us. Our spacing, our timing and our finishing were high-end, and we were patient on getting the shots we wanted to take rather than just taking shots."
Â
Leading 5-3 after a Virginia goal with 18:09 left in the opening half, the Tar Heels shut out the Cavaliers and closed the half on an 8-0 run to lead, 13-3, at the break. Hoeg (four goals, three assists), Ortega (four goals, two assists) and Warehime (three goals) led a dominant attack that scored on 13 of 19 first-half shots.
Â
Taylor Moreno (13-0) played the first 44:24 of the game in the cage and picked up the win, making four saves. Kimber Hower played the final 15:36 and made two saves while allowing two goals.
Â
UNC out-shot the Cavaliers, 31-24, scoring goals on 20 of 31 shots as a team. UVA held a 17-13 edge in draw controls, while Carolina had a 12-7 advantage in ground balls.
Â
Carolina will return to action by hosting Virginia again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
