Wurzburger's Six Points Lead Women's Lacrosse To 21st Win In A Row
April 18, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Freshman Caitlyn Wurzburger set a season scoring high for the second consecutive game as top-ranked North Carolina picked up a 15-4 win over No. 7 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
Coming off a then-season-high five-point performance in Friday's win over Virginia, Wurzburger finished with a season-high six points (two goals and four assists) on Sunday.
The Tar Heels won their 21st consecutive game, breaking the record to become the longest win streak in school history. The previous record was 20 in a row (17 straight to end the 2016 season and three in a row to start 2017).
In addition to Wurzburger's career day, the Tar Heels got strong performances from Ally Mastroianni (three goals, four draw controls and a ground ball), Scottie Rose Growney (three goals, one assist and two draw controls), Katie Hoeg (two goals and one assist) and Jamie Ortega (two goals and a caused turnover in less than one half of action).
Kerrigan Miller added a goal, an assist and a draw control for UNC. Tayler Warehime and Julia Dorsey each scored goals and defender Kayla Wood had her first career assist on Senior Day. Four different Cavaliers scored goals.
"Virginia is a top-10 opponent, so we were looking to continue the quality of play and level of play we had on Friday into today's game," head coach Jenny Levy said after the win. "I thought the first half in particular was really good. We executed better on the draw, we did better defensively. We anticipated some differences from what they did defensively against us on Friday, and I thought we adjusted well to that, too."
Ortega left the game with 10:47 remaining in the first half and the Tar Heels leading, 9-0. She took a hard fall during a loose ball encounter with a Virginia defender. She did not return and finished with two goals and a caused turnover on three shots. Levy said after the game Ortega would be re-evaluated by doctors, but the hope is that the injury is not serious.
The Tar Heels led, 12-1, at halftime, outshooting the Cavaliers, 21-4, in the first 30 minutes. The Cavs out-shot UNC, 11-7, in the second half but still finished with a 28-15 shot deficit in the game. The Tar Heels controlled 12 of 20 draws in the game.
Carolina goalie Taylor Moreno (14-0) played well in the cage, limiting the Cavaliers to just two goals in 44:20 of action and making four saves. Kimber Hower finished up in goal for UNC, making two saves and allowing a pair of goals in the final 15:40.
Sunday's game marked the final regular season home game for seven Tar Heel seniors and graduate students: Hoeg, Miller, Wood, Katie Borque, Claire Nappi, Caroline Wakefield and Catie Woodruff.
Carolina will return to action when it concludes the regular season on Friday April 23 at Duke.
