Gymnastics Recognizes Historic 2021 Season
April 29, 2021 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL – In an unprecedented year, Carolina Gymnastics, led by Interim Head Coach Marie Denick, put together one of the program's most successful seasons in its decorated history.

The team's banquet highlighted both team and individual accomplishments in the gym, as well as recognition for what the program achieved outside of competition.

To begin the season, Carolina opened with a 195.200 against New Hampshire to set a program record score in a season-opening meet. The list of accomplishments just began there- as Carolina posted a 195.581 team NQS, its highest since 2004, and it's highest beam NQS in program history.

The Tar Heels finished the season ranked 39th in bars, up 11 spots from the 2020 season.

Individually, Elizabeth Culton earned Carolina's first All-America selection on beam since Courtney Bumpers in 2006. Culton was impressive throughout the entire season and capped off her tremendous 2021 campaign as the EAGL Bar and All-Around champion. She became Carolina's first EAGL All-Around champion since 2010.

The Durham, N.C. native represented North Carolina in the postseason when she competed in the Athens regional.

Culton and Hallie Thompson each shared a piece of the EAGL beam championship.

Student-athletes voted on team individual accolades as part of the end-of-year celebration. Culton took home the bars and beam award and was voted Carolina's Most Outstanding Gymnast. Emery Summey received the vault award while Lily Dean took home the floor award.

The coaching staff awarded accolades to the team as well, which recognized leadership, community service and character.

Brianna Greenlow was given the Newcomer Award and Sophie Silverstein was presented with the Most Improved Award.

The receipts of the #TARHEEL award were Hannah Nam, Culton and Thompson. Jamie Shearer was recognized with the Derek Galvin Pride and Spirit Award.

Dean and Summey earned the Martina Ballen Leadership Award. In addition, Drew Aldridge earned the Scholar-Athlete Award and Julianna Love received the Community Service Award.
