Love Fans A Career-High 15 In 3-2 Win Over Georgia Tech
May 20, 2021 | Baseball
ATLANTA – Austin Love led the way for North Carolina in game one with his second consecutive complete game and a career-high 15 strikeouts in a 3-2 game one win against Georgia Tech.
Love paired his 15-strikeout performance with zero walks. Dominant from the start, he surrendered just two runs on eight hits.
He was the first Tar Heel hurler to strikeout 15 batters since Gianluca Dalatri did it against Radford on Feb. 26, 2017.
After two innings of scores baseball, Georgia Tech took the first lead of the game in the third inning with a 2RBI single to right field.
Carolina answered with a run in the top of the fourth when Brett Centracchio roped a one-out double to score Danny Serretti. An inning later, Johnny Castagnozzi tied the game with a left-field no-doubter to even the score at two.
The Tar Heels loaded the bases in the sixth inning, and initially took the lead after an RBI single from Zarate on a 10-pitch at-bat, but the call was overturned and the inning was over.
Carolina had an opportunity in the eighth inning with runners on the corners and one out but was unable to capitalize.
Brett Centracchio broke the tie in the ninth inning with an RBI groundout to second base. He was at-bat with one out and the bases loaded, after Caleb Roberts drew a walk, Serretti doubled down the left-field line, and Mac Horvath was intentionally walked.
Love struck out the side to end the game and finished the contest with a 97 MPH fastball to secure the victory.
Serretti led the way for the Tar Heels at the plate with a pair of hits, which included a double.
With the win, Carolina won its fifth-straight contest.
Carolina returns to the diamond tomorrow at 6 p.m. in search of its seventh ACC series win of the 2021 season.
