Two UNC Men Advance To NCAA Singles/Doubles Quarterfinals

ORLANDO—William Blumberg continued his run into the NCAA Men's Singles Championship quarterfinals while Rinky Hijikata saw his tournament come to an end in Orlando on Tuesday. Blumberg advanced and will make his fourth consecutive appearance in the quarterfinal round.
Meanwhile, the doubles team of Blumberg and Brian Cernoch, seeded No. 2 in the tournament field, beat 24th-ranked Rithnvik Bollipalli and Jacob Wojcik of South Florida by a score of 7-5, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (6) in the round of 16.
Blumberg dispatched 14th-ranked Gabriel Diallo of Kentucky in less than an hour in his singles match, picking up the first win of the day in Orlando by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Blumberg won 30 of 35 first-serve points (86 percent) and won four break points in the match.
Hijikata saw his singles run come to an end in the round of 16 when fourth-seeded and fifth-ranked Valentin Vacherot of Texas A&M beat him, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Blumberg and Cernoch won the first set of their doubles match, 7-5, then dropped the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3). Blumberg and Cernoch advanced by winning the tiebreaker, moving on to the quarterfinal round.
