Sara Daavettila earns No. 1 overall seed in singles draw
ACC Player of the Year Sara Daavettila is the No. 1 overall seed in the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship, while North Carolina saw two of its doubles pairs receive national seeds in the NCAA Doubles Championship field that was announced on Tuesday evening.Â
Daavettila and Cameron Morra were given the No. 2 overall seed in the 32-team doubles draw, while Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty are the No. 4 overall seed.Â
Daavettila, the fifth-year senior from Williamston, Michigan, will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship for the fourth time in her career. Daavettila is one of three UNC players in program history to twice reach the quarterfinals with the others being Hayley Carter and Jamie Loeb.
This will also be her second time appearing in the doubles field. As a sophomore in 2018 playing alongside Alle Sanford, the duo reached the semifinals after being a late add to the field as the first alternate.Â
Carolina also saw four players earn at-large bids into the singles draw. Jones, Alexa Graham, Cameron Morra and freshman Fiona Crawley will compete May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.Â
A graduate student from Greenville, South Carolina, Jones earns her third trip to the NCAA Singles Championship. She was the No. 5 seed as a junior in 2019 and the No. 2 overall seed in 2018.Â
Jones and Morra were a 5–8 seed at the 2019 doubles competition and lost to the eventual national champions from UCLA in the quarterfinals.Â
Graham will compete in her second singles championship. The Garden City, New York, senior was the No. 7 seed as a junior in 2019 and reached the Round of 16.Â
She was the No. 2 seed in the 2019 doubles draw with Jessie Aney, and they also advanced to the Round of 16 that season. The same duo earned the No. 3 overall doubles seed in 2018.Â
Morra, the junior from Rockville, Maryland, became the first UNC freshman to ever reach the semifinals of an NCAA Singles Championship in her only other appearance in 2019.
Crawley makes the field in her first attempt. She leads the nation with a 25-0 singles record in 2021.Â
All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
