Sharpe Goes No. 29 Overall In First Round
July 29, 2021 | Men's Basketball
University of North Carolina freshman forward Day'Ron Sharpe was selected with the 29th pick in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft.
The Phoenix Suns selected Sharpe, but traded his rights to the Brooklyn Nets. The NBA announced the trade this evening, although trades won't become official until August 6. Sharpe will become the 16th former Tar Heel to play for the Nets franchise.
Sharpe is the 118th Tar Heel selected in NBA Draft history, the third most of any school. He is the 54th first-round pick to have played for Carolina, second most all-time.
This is the 36th different NBA Draft in which at least one Tar Heel was selected in the first round.
Sharpe is the 34th player coached by Roy Williams to be a first-round draft pick. He is the 23rd Tar Heel to play for Williams to be selected in the first round. Williams had a player taken in the first round in 12 of his 18 seasons as UNC's head coach.
Sharpe averaged 9.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in 2020-21 for the Tar Heels. He earned ACC All-Freshman team honors and was second in the voting for both ACC Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year.
The Greenville, N.C., native led the country in offensive rebounding percentage (.183) and led the ACC in offensive rebounds (3.4 per game).
His 7.0 offensive rebounds per 40 minutes were the most in a season on record by any Tar Heel (Kennedy Meeks had 6.25 offensive rebounds per 40 minutes in 2016-17). His 15.8 rebounds per 40 minutes were the second-highest on record in a season by a Tar Heel behind only Sean May's 16.01 in 2004-05.
He led UNC with six defensive player of the game awards and in scoring four times, including a season-high 25 points at home vs. Notre Dame.
