Women's Basketball Announces Non-Conference Schedule
August 24, 2021 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's basketball team will play six games at home and travel to Texas, Minnesota and the Bahamas as part of a challenging 2021-22 non-conference schedule, announced on Tuesday. The Tar Heels open the season on Nov. 9, hosting North Carolina A&T at Carmichael Arena.
"Our non-conference schedule was created in an effort to challenge us against teams from all across the country, versus a variety of styles of plays, and doing so in unique environments before getting into the gauntlet of the ACC," said UNC coach Courtney Banghart, who is headed into her third season at the program's helm. "We will match up against opponents from the Pac-12, the Big 12, the Big Ten, and the ACC, in addition to playing some of the best programs in our region. Coming off a Covid year without fans, we are all very eager to return to the energy of our fans in Carmichael."
Current season ticket holders can renew their season tickets now by visiting GoHeels.com/renew or by contacting the UNC Ticket Office (800-722-4335, tickets@unc.edu). New season tickets will go on sale to the public starting on Sept. 20th.
In addition to the Aggies, who won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship and played in the NCAA Tournament in 2021, the Tar Heels will host Appalachian State (Nov. 17), James Madison (Dec. 5), UNC Asheville (Dec. 12), Jacksonville (Dec. 15) and Alabama State (Dec. 21) at Carmichael.
The Tar Heels will play their first road game on Nov. 14 at Charlotte, taking on the 49ers on their home court after the two met in Chapel Hill last season.
On Nov. 21, UNC will travel to face TCU in the Maggie Dixon Classic, which has been played annually since 2006 except for a Covid hiatus last season. The event honors the late Maggie Dixon, the sister of TCU men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon. She died on April 6, 2006, of a heart arrhythmia, just weeks after coaching Army West Point to its first NCAA Tournament. Alabama and Duke will also participate in the event, meeting in the other game of the Nov. 21 double header.
The Tar Heels will spend Thanksgiving in the Bahamas for the Goombay Splash, where UNC will meet VCU and Washington on Nov. 26 and 27. The opponent for each date will be determined when the Rams and Huskies meet on Nov. 25.
After a weekend at the beach, Carolina will trade swimsuits for parkas and travel to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota on Dec. 1 as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the final nonconference road game of the fall semester.
The Tar Heels play four consecutive non-conference home games to finish 2021, with JMU, UNC Asheville, Jacksonville and Alabama State visiting. The Atlantic Coast Conference portion of the schedule, expected to begin in December, will be announced next month.
