UNC To Face Minnesota in WBB Big Ten/ACC Challenge
August 3, 2021 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) — North Carolina will travel to face Minnesota on Dec. 1 as part of the 14th Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge, matchups for which were announced Tuesday. The event, which was not played in 2020, returns this season and is scheduled to continue through the 2026-27 season.
The Challenge takes place over two days in early December, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 1, with six matchups as Atlantic Coast Conference schools Pitt, Syracuse and Wake Forest play host to Big Ten programs, while UNC, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech travel to Big Ten sites. On the following night, Boston College, Clemson, Duke and Louisville will serve as the ACC host schools, while Florida State, Miami, NC State and Notre Dame will play at Big Ten sites.
Game times and television information will be announced at a later date. All ACC home games in the Challenge will be shown on either the ACC Network, ACC Network Extra or one of the ESPN networks, while Big Ten home games will appear on either Big Ten Network, Big Ten Network+ or one of the ESPN networks.
The UNC-Minnesota matchup will be the fifth all-time and first since 2017, when Carolina won 88-83 at Carmichael Arena as part of that year's Challenge. The Tar Heels lead the overall series 4-1. This will be the first meeting in Minneapolis.
The Big Ten and ACC offices collaborate to determine the Challenge schedule each season. In addition, the official title of the Challenge rotates each year. The 2021 event will be referred to as the Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge and will continue to mirror the official title of the two conferences' Challenge agreements for men's basketball and softball.
UNC is one of eight ACC women's basketball teams that competed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the most of any conference. It marked the third consecutive NCAA Tournament that the ACC has had eight teams selected, leading all conferences in each of those years and matching the ACC record for teams in the field (2014-15, 2018-19).
The Big Ten and ACC have been among the most competitive conferences on the national women's basketball landscape for many years, with the conferences combining to send 17 schools to postseason play in 2020-21.
