September 14, 2021 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – The UNC volleyball team earned its fifth sweep of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Elon in straight sets to improve to 9-0. The Tar Heels had their best attacking percentage of the season at .413, while Nia Parker-Robinson notched 14 kills for her third-straight match in double-digits. Amanda Phegley had a team-high .857 clip and contributed seven kills.
"We got off to a slow start, but I was pleased with how the team got better throughout the match," head coach Joe Sagula said.
"We had some good opportunities for a lot of people to contribute and that's going to be very important as we develop out depth. I'm glad we can keep our momentum going and find different ways to be successful."
Carolina opened the match sluggish offensively. After trading the lead with Carolina in the first few points, the Phoenix jumped out to a 10-7 advantage. After the Tar Heels were able to get it back to within a one-point game, 13-12, the Phoenix went on a 5-0 run to go ahead by six.
UNC fought back, going on a 12-5 run to end the set, highlighted by five kills from Parker-Robinson, to win the set 25-23.
Carolina out-attacked Elon .294 to .121 in set two, with Meghan Neelon, who had 19 assists in the match, contributing 13 assists in the set alone, while Mabrey Shaffmaster had three service aces to take the 25-17 win.
The third set was completely dominated by Carolina. As a team, the Tar Heels had a season-best .517 attacking clip, while holding the Phoenix to -.038. Elon had just eight points in set, the first time since Sep. 25, 2015, that Carolina held a team to single digits in a set.
The Heels will look to continue their hot start, the best start for the program since the 2013 team went 15-0 to open the season, when they host Charlotte on Friday night at 6 p.m. Carolina will be honoring 2020 Paralympic sitting volleyball gold medalist Emma Schieck in a pre-game ceremony.
