Heels Hold First Scrimmage Of The Spring
January 28, 2022 | Baseball
Chapel Hill, NC -Â Â The North Carolina Tar Heels held their first scrimmage of the Spring on Friday afternoon under cold, gray skies at Boshamer Stadium as the Navy squad took a 2-1 win in a six-inning scrimmage dominated by pitching.
Blue took a 1-0 lead in the third on Alberto Osuna's single to right that drove in Vance Honeycutt. Navy promptly tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth on Mac Horvath's 395-foot solo home run to left center. Navy scored the winning run in the top of the sixth as Johnny Castagnozzi's double down the left field line plated Mac Horvath.
Each team had four bases hits, while Navy committed two throwing errors and Blue had no errors. Casey Cook's second-inning double was the only other extra-base hit in addition to Horvath and Castagnozzi. Horvath was the only player with multiple base hits on his 2-3 effort at the plate.
Seven pitchers saw action. Max Carlson started for Navy and gave up one run in three innings while striking out five and walking two. Shawn Rapp, Nik Pry and Davis Palermo each threw one scoreless inning for Navy with Palermo closing things out in the sixth and final inning.
Brandon Schaeffer started for Blue and gave up one run in 3.2 innings while striking out three with no walks. Kyle Mott and Gage Gillian threw in relief for Blue. No Blue pitcher gave up a walk.
Carolina is supposed to hold its next scrimmage on Saturday, Â but that is in doubt due to a very wintry forecast.
