Quick takeaways from Carolina's matchup with Virginia.
By Adam Lucas
1. Carolina got exactly what it needed with an authoritative 74-58 whipping of Virginia on Saturday afternoon.
2. This was the Armando Bacot game. Bacot set career highs in points, rebounds and offensive rebounds and completely dominated the game. He finished with 29 points and 21 rebounds, becoming the second Tar Heel in history to get at least 20 boards in the Smith Center (the other was Sean May).
3. Bacot was good enough that he needs two notes. He had the first Carolina 20/20 game since Brice Johnson against Florida State in 2016. Bacot also became the first player to get 20/20 against Virginia since Tim Duncan in 1997. The Cavaliers simply had no answer for the Tar Heel junior in the paint.
4. The Tar Heels made their big second-half run with Anthony Harris in the game. The guard provided good energy and hit a three-pointer for good measure. He finished with five points and an assist in 14 minutes and has made himself a key part of the rotation.
5. Carolina got the energized version of Caleb Love in the first half, and it was a difference-maker. Love had ten points, tossed in a couple three-pointers with high degree of difficulty, handed out three assists and had no turnovers. He also made good decisions all afternoon against the notoriously tough Wahoo defense and finished with 16 points and five assists with only one turnover.
6. Love's decision making was part of an overall much better effort at sharing the ball by Carolina. The Tar Heels had 19 assists on 28 field goals as five different players had at least two assists. That's a big reason why Carolina was able to shoot 47.5 percent from the field--not great, but a very good performance against a Tony Bennett-coached team.
7. And they also held onto the ball much better than they have in recent meetings. The Tar Heels committed just nine turnovers.
8. Bacot was aided in the post by fellow big man Brady Manek, who did much of his damage from the perimeter. The grad transfer hit five three-pointers and scored 19 points.
9. Terrific ceremony honoring Danny Green at halftime. In addition to being one of the all-time fan favorites of the Roy Williams era, the 2009 national champion recently made a $1 million gift to endow a basketball scholarship. For more on why he decided to make the gift, click here. "We ask players to give a lot when they come to Carolina," Roy Williams said during the ceremony. Danny gave us a lot. He gave us that banner, and he gave me this championship ring on my finger...From dancing on the sideline to giving a scholarship, how can you do more than what Danny did for Carolina?"
10. Carolina now gets a week off to get healthy--they again played without Dawson Garcia and Kerwin Walton--and get ready for a tough ACC stretch that begins at home against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
