Gymnastics Releases 2023 Schedule
October 18, 2022 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina Gymnastics head coach Danna Durante has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2023 season, highlighted by five home meets at Carmichael Arena and a road contest with a top-5 team from a season ago.
"We intentionally created a highly-competitive schedule this year, and we look forward to the challenges this lineup will provide us," said Durante. "Our schedule is filled with plenty of top teams in our conference and around the country, and we're eager to get started and continue raising the bar for Carolina Gymnastics."
Carolina first hosts the annual Blue and White Scrimmage on Dec. 14 for a fun, spirited intrasquad meet before officially kicking off the 2023 campaign on Jan. 6 with location and opponents set to be announced soon.
The Tar Heels return home for a three-meet stretch, first hosting in-state and Eastern Atlantic Gymnastics League rival NC State on Jan. 9. Following two weeks off from competition, UNC hosts UW Stout and Yale on Jan. 23 before welcoming defending conference champion George Washington to Carmichael Arena on Jan. 28.
Carolina begins the month of February in nearby Raleigh for a tri-meet with NC State and Western Michigan on Feb. 4 before heading to Durham, N.H., on Feb. 12 for an EAGL quad meet with LIU Brooklyn, George Washington and host New Hampshire. The program rounds out its road trip with a visit to league foe Pitt on Feb. 19.
After facing another conference competitor in Temple on Feb. 24 for their penultimate home contest, the Tar Heels are once again on the road for a meet with opponents and location to be determined shortly.
UNC concludes its 2023 home slate by hosting Air Force on March 3, which will also serve as the Senior Day celebration. The team hits the road to cap off the regular season on March 10 in Colombia, Mo., to face Missouri, which finished fourth in the Southeastern Conference and fifth in the NCAA last year.
Returning to Durham once again, postseason competition commences on March 18 with the EAGL Championships, hosted by New Hampshire. NCAA Regionals are scheduled for March 29-April 2 and the NCAA Championship is set for April 13-15 in Fort Worth, Texas.
All start times are to be determined and will be announced at a later date.
"We are excited about our 2023 schedule," Durante continued. "This team is determined to build on last year's success and is looking forward to the opportunities we will have to strengthen the brand of Carolina Gymnastics."
With Durante now in her second year at the helm, Carolina is eager to build upon the success it experienced in 2022. Last season, UNC was crowned the undefeated EAGL regular-season champion, saw its first regional berth since 2017 and had the highest final NCAA ranking in a decade.
Returning to the Tar Heels' lineup is All-America selection Elizabeth Culton and Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Region Six Gymnast of the Year Julia Knower, as well as 2022 All-EAGL honorees Lali Dekanoidze, Bri Greenlow and Isabelle Schaefer. UNC has also welcomed five newcomers to its roster.
Joining Durante on the coaching staff for another season in Chapel Hill is Marie Denick and Amelia Hundley, the 2022 EAGL Assistant Coaches of the Year.
