Women's Basketball Improves To 4-0 With Road Victory Over JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Led by 24 points from junior Deja Kelly, the No. 13 North Carolina women's basketball team earned its first road victory of the season with a 76-65 win at James Madison on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UNC improved to 4-0 for the fourth straight season.
Three Tar Heels finished the game in double digits, including 18 points from Eva Hodgson and 13 from Alyssa Ustby. Anya Poole led UNC with 12 rebounds.
The first half was a tight contest between the Tar Heels and Dukes. Kelly got UNC on the board first with a jumper seven seconds into the action. The teams were tied at 19 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was just the third time this season in which the Tar Heels haven't outscored their opponents. The Dukes led 15-11 in the period as UNC hit just 26.7 percent of its shots and trailed JMU by four at halftime, 34-30.
UNC's offense got into gear in the third quarter, outscoring JMU 20-13 on 46.2 percent shooting, with Hodgson and Kelly combining for 16 of the Tar Heels' 20 points.
After starting the game with two points on 1-of-9 shooting, Kelly came out of halftime on fire. She got it done from the field with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and from the line, making 11 of 12 of her free throws.
Hodgson, who had five points in the first half, added 13 points for the Heels in the second half. The redshirt senior shot 5-of-9 from the field, including three baskets from behind the arc.
With 13 points, Kelly helped the Tar Heels pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring JMU 26-18 with UNC shooting 50.0 percent as a team.
UNC made 22 of its 29 free throws in the victory, the most made shots from the line for the Tar Heels since Dec. 21, 2021, against Alabama State.
UNC now plays three road games in a row. First up, the Tar Heels travel to Portland, Ore., for a matchup with No. 21 Oregon on Thursday at the Phil Knight Invitational.
