Volleyball Sweeps Virginia On Senior Day

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina volleyball team celebrated a successful Senior Day on Saturday afternoon in Carmichael Arena, defeating Virginia in straight sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-20).
In a pre-match ceremony, the Tar Heels honored the Carolina careers of the team's seven graduating seniors: Parker Austin, Charley Niego, Niki Khoshatefeh, Olivia Diaz, Karenna Wurl, Olivia Diaz and Skyy Howard.
Carolina finished the regular season 17-12 (9-9 Atlantic Coast Conference), while Virginia saw its season end with a 12-17 (4-14 ACC) record.
Led by Mabrey Shaffmaster with 12 kills and Skyy Howard with seven, the Tar Heels outhit the Cavaliers .269-.036, a season-low for Virginia. Anita Babic ran the offense with 30 assists, bringing her season-total to 919, averaging 8.84 assists per set.
Kaya Merkler led Carolina's block with six, including a pair of solo blocks, followed by four from Liv Mogridge and three from Shaffmaster, while Maddy May had a team-best nine digs.
Carolina, the top serving team in the ACC, had seven aces in the match compared to a pair from Virginia, with Merkler and Shaffmaster each tallying two and Karenna Wurl, Carson Overbeck and Anita Babic each with one.
The Tar Heels will now wait to see if they receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be held on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 on ESPNU.
