CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's soccer team has moved on to the next round of the ACC Tournament, traveling to Syracuse, N.Y., for a quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 Syracuse on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The match between the seventh-seeded Tar Heels (8-4-5, 2-2-4) and the Orange (12-2-3, 5-1-2), the tournament's second seed, will be broadcast on ACC Network with Glenn Davis and Kaylyn Kyle on call.
Ranked fourth in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, Syracuse will be the fifth top-20 and second top-5 opponent Carolina has faced this season. The Tar Heels' last win over a ranked opponent was a 3-1 victory over No. 11 Notre Dame on Oct. 29, 2021.
UNC secured a spot in the quarterfinals after posting a 1-0 victory over 10th-seed Boston College on Wednesday at Dorrance Field in the first round. After controlling the game from the first whistle, the home team found the chance it was looking for in the 82nd minute when Cameron Fisher's corner kick connected with Ernest Bawa inside the 6-yard box, whose header bounced off the goal line and into the upper left corner of the net.
It marked Bawa's third goal of the season to now rank second on the roster. Akeim Clarke and Milo Garvanian both have four goals on the year, the latter who also has a team-high 12 points. Garvanian and Tim Schels have recorded four assists apiece.
Schels was named the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's College Player of the Week on Nov. 2. The team captain totaled four assists in two games, guiding UNC to a 3-0 win at William & Mary on Oct. 25 and a 2-2 draw with No. 18 Virginia on Oct. 28. His pair of assists against the Tribe was also the first multi-assist game for a UNC player since Sept. 6, 2019.
This will be the 10th meeting between North Carolina and Syracuse in program history with UNC looking to extend its all-time series record that falls in its favor at 4-1-4. In the ACC Tournament, the Orange hold a 1-0-2 edge over UNC and advanced on penalty kicks after both ties.
The last contest between the two teams was a 1-0 Carolina win on Nov. 3, 2021, in the opening round of the ACC Tournament where Garvanian scored the game-winning golden goal off a PK in the 106th minute.
